A Little Shelter by the Sea
Some beach days are made for swimming. Others are made for staying exactly where you are.
Beneath a bright, rainbow-striped umbrella, two beachgoers settle in to watch the waves. A chair, a small table, and a few well-loved beach essentials turn a patch of sand into a seaside living room. Beyond them, the water rolls in gentle bands of blue and green, breaking into white foam before slipping back toward the horizon.
I was drawn to the contrast between the umbrella’s cheerful colors and the quiet, unhurried mood of the scene. It feels like one of those stretches of time when there’s nowhere else to be: the sun warms the sand, the waves provide the soundtrack, and conversation can pause without anyone needing to fill the silence.
The figures are turned away from us, inviting us to imagine ourselves in their place. Perhaps they’re sharing a story. Perhaps they’re simply watching the tide. Either way, the painting is less about a particular moment than the feeling of being there—comfortable, unhurried, and close to the sea.
